The four official ways to pay SHA
SHA's own payment FAQ for non-salaried members lists these channels (seen 21 October 2026):
| Channel | What you do | Reference to use |
|---|---|---|
| M-PESA paybill | Lipa na M-PESA → Pay Bill → business number 200222 | Your national ID number as the account number |
| USSD | Dial *147#, enter your ID, select MAKE PAYMENT and follow the prompts | Your ID number |
| afyayangu.go.ke portal | Log in with your ID and PIN, choose Pay: an M-PESA PIN prompt (STK push) comes to your phone | Your account on the portal |
| Bank | Pay at one of the banks SHA works with | Your national ID number or your SHA Client Registry (CR) number |
Pay SHA by M-PESA paybill, step by step
- Open M-PESA on your phone and choose Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill.
- Enter the business number 200222.
- As the account number, enter your national ID number.
- Enter the amount: your monthly contribution as set by means testing (at least KES 300), plus any arrears and penalties.
- Enter your M-PESA PIN and confirm. Keep the M-PESA confirmation SMS as your receipt.
You can check that the payment reached your account on afyayangu.go.ke, where SHA shows your statement, and whether your cover is active on eligibility.sha.go.ke — see how to check your SHA status.
How much to pay
- Salaried workers: 2.75% of gross monthly income, minimum KES 300 a month, deducted and remitted by the employer (SHA premium rates). You do not pay anything yourself.
- Non-salaried members: the amount comes from means testing — a questionnaire on afyayangu.go.ke about your household, income and living conditions (SHA). The minimum is KES 300 a month, whatever the result.
To estimate a salaried contribution, use our SHA contribution calculator. If you have not registered yet, start with SHA registration: you cannot pay before you have an SHA account.
Paying in instalments: Lipa SHA Pole Pole
SHA's Lipa SHA Pole Pole page (seen 21 October 2026) lets you pay part up front and the rest in small amounts:
- Who qualifies: a non-salaried Kenyan resident, registered with SHA, who has completed means testing and received an annual premium, with no pending SHA arrears.
- How it works: you pay the first 4 months' premium at the start, then spread the rest daily, weekly or monthly, by M-PESA Ratiba or by dialling *147# or *254#.
- Option 1: pay the 4 months up front by paybill 200222 (account: your ID number), or dial *147# and select Lipa Pole Pole.
- Option 2: dial *254#, go to Hustler Fund → Lipa Pole Pole → SHA Payment, choose a repayment plan and set up M-PESA Ratiba for automatic deductions.
- Loans: SHA says Hustler Fund or Bridge loan holders qualify unless their loan is more than 45 days overdue, and that each instalment must be repaid within 30 days.
If you are an employer
SHA's public notice to employers sets the rules for staff contributions:
- Deadline: contributions deducted from salaries must be submitted by the 9th of each month (SHIF Regulations 2024, clause 16(1)).
- Late remittance: a penalty of 2% of the outstanding amount for each month it is unpaid.
- Your staff lose cover: employees with outstanding contributions cannot use SHIF services until all dues are settled.
- Where: the SHA employer portal, employers.sha.go.ke; help on 147 or customercare@sha.go.ke.
SHA is separate from the work-injury cover every employer must buy for its staff: see our WIBA insurance guide.
What happens if you pay late or stop paying
| If… | What SHA says |
|---|---|
| A contribution is unpaid | A penalty of 2% a month on the unpaid contribution (SHA) |
| You need hospital care at Level 4 and above (SHIF) | Your contributions must be up to date, so arrears and penalties are paid first |
| You need primary care or emergency, chronic or critical illness care | These government-funded services stay open even if your contributions lapse (SHA) |
| You stop paying for months | You are not removed from SHA for non-payment, but arrears and penalties keep adding up |
Private medical insurance is a separate policy with its own premium: see SHA vs private medical insurance for how the two work together.
