Check a motor insurance cover in Kenya

How to check a motor insurance certificate in Kenya (*352# and DMVIC)

Short answerChecked 23 September 2026
Kenyan motor certificates are digital (DMVIC, run by the Association of Kenya Insurers). Check one by dialling *352#, with the DMVIC app, or on verify.dmvic.com with the certificate number and the registration or chassis number. The result shows the insurer, the cover dates and whether the certificate is valid, cancelled or invalid. The date in the verification must match the date on the certificate.

Three ways to check

ChannelHow
USSDDial *352# and follow the prompts (no internet needed)
AppDownload the DMVIC / AKI VIC app (Android and iOS)
Webverify.dmvic.com: certificate type, certificate number, then registration or chassis number; a one-time code confirms your phone

According to the DMVIC verification form, the result gives the certificate number, chassis and registration, insurer, insured name, policy start and end dates, the certificate status, and any cancellation date and reason.

Check the certificate before you pay a renewal to someone you do not know, and again once it is issued. The Association of Kenya Insurers asks drivers to make sure the date in the verification message matches the date on the certificate.

What the law requires of drivers

Under Cap. 405:

  • Driver and owner must carry and display a certificate in the prescribed form (s.9(1)).
  • After an accident with injuries where police did not see the certificate at the scene, show it at a police station or to an officer within 24 hours (s.9(2)).
  • The owner must give police insurance information within 7 days of a request (s.9(4)).
  • If a policy is cancelled, return the certificate within 7 days (s.13).
  • Driving uninsured: fine up to KES 10,000, up to 2 years in prison, or both, and a possible 12-month driving ban (s.4(2)).

After an accident

  1. Stop, and give your name and address, the owner's details and the vehicle's registration to anyone who asks (Traffic Act s.73).
  2. If anyone is injured, report to the police as soon as possible and within 24 hours (Traffic Act).
  3. Notify your insurer in writing and keep copies of every document.
  4. Once you have given all the documents, the insurer must settle within 90 days of the claim being reported (the Commissioner can extend by 30 days); after that a 5% penalty on the unpaid amount is due (Insurance Act s.203).
