What DMVIC is
Since 2020 insurers order, generate and send motor certificates through the AKI Vehicle Insurance Certificate platform; you print it in colour and display it on the windscreen. The aim is one certificate per vehicle, ending double insurance and fake or stolen certificates (AKI).
The verification screen shows the certificate number, chassis and registration, insurer, policy holder, policy start and end dates, the status, and any cancellation date and reason (DMVIC).
The insurer sends the certificate through digital channels such as e-mail; it looks like the old paper one (AKI). It comes from the insurer, not from DMVIC: if you lose it, ask the insurer or the intermediary who sold you the policy.
Three ways to check a certificate

DMVIC support: the DMVIC log-in page gives support@dmvic.com (DMVIC). The Association of Kenya Insurers lists 0709 640 000 and info@akinsure.com on its contact page. A wrong name, wrong registration number or missing certificate is fixed by the insurer that issued it (or the agent or broker who sold you the policy), because only the insurer can issue, cancel or re-issue a certificate.

The four certificate forms
The Certificate Rules under Cap. 405 set four forms — the certificate must match how the vehicle is used:

Temporary certificates (first registration or transfer) last 30 days. The certificate goes on the left side behind the windscreen, clearly visible (Cap. 405 and Rules).
The rules drivers and owners must follow
- Carry and display the certificate (s.9).
- After an accident with injuries, if police did not see the certificate at the scene, show it at a police station within 24 hours (s.9(2)).
- Give police the insurance details they ask for within 7 days (s.9(4)).
- If the policy is cancelled, return the certificate within 7 days — not doing so is an offence (s.13).
- Proof of insurance is needed to licence the vehicle (s.14).
- Driving uninsured: fine up to KES 10,000, up to 2 years in prison, or both, and a possible 12-month ban — mandatory on a repeat conviction (s.4).

Fake certificates
AKI, the Traffic Police, IRA and the Insurance Fraud Investigation Unit prosecuted 44 forged-certificate cases in a year, with fines of KES 15,000–200,000 and prison terms of 4 months to 2 years; AKI's advice is to buy only from authorised agents and brokers (AKI).
AKI's customer service charter says motor policies are issued immediately or within 5 working days, changes within 24 hours, and mentions a 30-day cooling-off period (AKI charter). If a claim is not paid, the insurer has 90 days once all documents are in (Insurance Act s.203).

Can I check a motorcycle's insurance on Bima Yangu?

Which certificate form does a matatu need?
Form 1, for vehicles carrying fare-paying passengers (Certificate Rules under Cap. 405). Private cars use Form 3, motorcycles Form 4.
What happens if I don't return a cancelled certificate?
It is an offence: Cap. 405 s.13 requires you to surrender it to the insurer within 7 days of cancellation.
