MUA in full: the company behind the name

MUA's Kenyan "About us" page, read in October 2026, tells the story behind the three letters:

  • Phoenix of East Africa Assurance Company Limited was the Kenyan short-term insurer, with roots in a Phoenix Assurance agency opened in Nairobi in 1912.
  • In 2014 its Kenyan majority shareholders sold 66% of their shares to MUA, which the page describes as "a leading insurance company in Mauritius, which was established in 1948".
  • In 2018 "the various divisions of the Mauritius Union Group", Phoenix of East Africa included, came together under a single brand: MUA.
  • In 2020 MUA acquired Saham Kenya, and the two general insurance businesses were merged in 2021.

The licensed company today is MUA Insurance (Kenya) Limited. It appears on the Insurance Regulatory Authority's list of general insurers, not on the life list — see the list of licensed insurance companies in Kenya. Its premium, claims ratio and complaint figures from the regulator are on our MUA insurer profile. MUA also operates in Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, through companies licensed in those countries.

Tulizo Bora: MUA's family medical cover

MUA's Tulizo Bora page describes an inpatient cover for individuals and families, with outpatient, maternity and optical as options. The inpatient limit is shared by the family for the year (KES):

  • Who can join: the principal member, spouse and children (own, adopted or foster, up to 21). The maximum joining age is 60 (age next birthday); cover runs to 65, and existing members above 65 can stay to 75 after medical underwriting. Principal members and spouses aged 50 to 65 take a medical examination at their own cost.
  • Bed: from a general ward bed up to an ensuite room at KES 18,000 a day, depending on the level, "net of NHIF".
  • Optional outpatient: KES 75,000, 100,000, 150,000 or 200,000 a year per family; consultations at panel doctors paid up to KES 3,000 each.
  • Co-payment on outpatient: KES 1,000 at Nairobi, Aga Khan, Karen, MP Shah and AAR hospitals, KES 500 at Mater, Mombasa and Avenue hospitals and their satellite clinics, KES 200 elsewhere.

Waiting periods: 60 days for any hospitalisation except after an accident (waived with proof of an earlier continuous medical cover), 30 days for outpatient illness claims, none for accidents, 1 year for pre-existing and chronic conditions, 12 months for maternity and 2 years for cancer treatment. To join, MUA asks for the signed application form, copies of IDs (birth certificates for children), the principal member's KRA PIN and the full annual premium.

MUA's page publishes the benefits but no premium for Tulizo Bora: ask MUA or a licensed broker for a written quote. The bed limits are written "net of NHIF", which has been replaced by SHA — ask MUA in writing how a hospital bill is split with SHA. Our health insurance guide explains how SHA and private cover fit together.

MUA motor insurance: the three covers

MUA's private motor page offers the three usual levels for a car used for social, domestic and pleasure purposes and the owner's business:

  • Comprehensive — accidental damage and fire, theft, damage to other vehicles or property, injury or death of passengers and of third parties, and accident rescue through MUA's partnership with MyResque. Riot and strike, natural perils, windscreen and non-standard accessories can be added, "normally at a nominal additional cost".
  • Third Party, Fire and Theft — as comprehensive but without own damage from an accident; MUA says it suits vehicles not used on the road.
  • Third Party Only — injury or death of third parties and nothing for your own vehicle: MUA calls it "the minimum cover required by the Motor Insurance Act".

MUA does not publish motor rates on these pages. The difference between the levels, and what the law requires, is explained in third-party vs comprehensive car insurance.

Utulivu: the one personal price MUA publishes

Utulivu is a personal accident cover, "24 hour worldwide". MUA's Utulivu page gives this plan of benefits (KES):

BenefitUtulivu PlusUtulivu
Accidental death1,000,000500,000
Accidental permanent total disablement1,000,000500,000
Accidental medical expenses25,00010,000
Last expense25,00010,000
Hospital cash at 1,000 a day5,0005,000
Premium for 12 months1,680900
Premium for 6 months1,080600
Premium for 3 months600420

It pays only for bodily injury from an accident: MUA states that a death following an illness or disease is not covered, and that once a benefit is paid the policy lapses automatically.

How to claim with MUA Kenya

Every MUA Kenya page has a File a claim link to a form for motor, domestic package, health and personal accident claims. For Tulizo Bora, MUA's page sets out the medical process:

  1. Emergency admission: you are admitted with biometric access and the hospital contacts MUA within 24 hours for pre-authorisation.
  2. Planned admission: send MUA the doctor's appointment or the hospital's admission report so it can authorise the stay.
  3. Hospitals: MUA has credit arrangements with certain hospitals (its provider panel is linked from its home page). You may be treated in any registered hospital and claim back up to 70%, with MUA's prior approval.
  4. Reimbursement: send the filled claim form, original receipts, the medical report and discharge summary, the itemised hospital bill and MUA's prior written approval.

If MUA delays or refuses a valid claim, the regulator's figures and the complaint route are on the MUA profile. To compare MUA's covers with other licensed insurers on the same benefits, ask for quotes.
