Monarch third-party insurance in Kenya

Price, what it covers and how to buy

Short answerChecked 28 October 2026
Monarch publishes no price for its third-party insurance: its motor vehicle page (seen 28 October 2026) lists third party only, third party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover, but no premium rate, so the price comes as a quote — through its application form, its online platform bima.monarchinsurance.co.ke or WhatsApp. The Monarch Insurance Company Limited is on IRA's 2026 list of licensed general insurers, and a third-party policy must at least cover death or injury you cause to other people, up to KES 3 million per person under Cap. 405. Get the premium in writing and compare it with other licensed insurers before you pay.

What Monarch says about the price of third-party cover

Monarch's motor vehicle page describes its covers but gives no premium, no rate and no minimum price for third-party only (seen 28 October 2026). It says the cover "is taken depending on whether the vehicle is used and legally registered for private use, commercial purposes or use for hire" — so a private car, a commercial vehicle and a vehicle for hire are priced as different classes.

The same page links three ways to get a price:

  • Buy Insurance Cover: Monarch's online platform at bima.monarchinsurance.co.ke, to buy cover online.
  • Application Form: Monarch's online quote request form, answered by the insurer.
  • Get Insurance Via WhatsApp: a WhatsApp line linked from the page.
A "Monarch third-party price" quoted on a social media post, a forum or a reseller's site is not Monarch's statement. Only the figure on your own quote or policy schedule, issued by The Monarch Insurance Company Limited, counts.

Some insurers do publish a flat third-party-only premium for a private car; our article on the cheapest car insurance in Kenya shows one such schedule, taken from the insurer's own brochure, and explains how motor premiums are built.

What Monarch's third-party cover pays for

Monarch's page sets out its three motor covers, in its own words:

Cover on Monarch's pageWhat Monarch says it covers
Third Party Only"Liability to third parties only"
Third Party, Fire and TheftLiability to third parties, plus the vehicle itself "in case of fire and or theft"
ComprehensiveLiability to third parties, plus the vehicle "in case of fire, theft and or accidental damage"

The page does not list the limits of the third-party cover. The law sets the floor: section 5(b) of the Insurance (Motor Vehicles Third Party Risks) Act, Cap. 405 requires the policy to cover liability for the death of, or bodily injury to, any person caused by the use of the vehicle on a road, and allows it to leave out any sum above KES 3 million for a claim by one person. Damage to another person's car or property is not part of that legal minimum, and damage to your own vehicle never is under third-party only.

So before you pay, ask Monarch to state in writing whether your policy adds third-party property damage, and up to what limit, and whether passengers are covered. Our Cap. 405 guide explains who the compulsory cover protects and what it may leave out.

Is Monarch allowed to sell third-party insurance?

Yes. Cap. 405 (s.5(a)) requires the policy to come from an insurer allowed to carry on motor insurance business, and IRA's 2026 list of licensed entities names The Monarch Insurance Company Limited among the general insurers — the licence that covers motor — as well as among the long-term (life) insurers.

One gap to know about: IRA's Insurance Industry Release for Q4 2025 says its figures include all regulated insurers except a few, among them The Monarch Insurance Company Limited-General and -Life, "due to non-compliance with the submission requirements". So the regulator's report gives no premium, market share or claims figure for Monarch for that period. The same report's complaints chart names Monarch General with 27 complaints to IRA in October–December 2025.

Our Monarch profile has its head office, branches, the other covers it sells and how to report a claim.

How to buy Monarch third-party insurance

  1. Know your vehicle's class: private, commercial or for hire, as Monarch's page asks. A matatu, taxi or ride-hailing car is not priced or covered as a private car.
  2. Get the quote on bima.monarchinsurance.co.ke, through the application form or on WhatsApp, or at a Monarch branch.
  3. Read what the quote includes: the premium in shillings, the cover period, and any third-party property and passenger limits.
  4. Pay only through a channel Monarch itself gives you — its platform, its branches or its own stated payment details — not to a personal number.
  5. Check the certificate once issued: motor certificates in Kenya are digital, and a DMVIC check (*352# or the AKI VIC app) shows the insurer, the vehicle and the cover dates. A certificate that does not verify is not valid cover.

After an accident: what the law asks of you and of Monarch

  • Show the certificate. If no police officer inspected it at the scene of an accident with injury, show it at a police station or to an officer within 24 hours (Cap. 405, s.9(2)).
  • Tell Monarch at once. Monarch's motor page links to its online claim form. Under s.10(2)(a), the insurer does not have to pay a court judgment unless it had notice of the case before or within 30 days after the proceedings began.
  • The insurer pays the victim. Under s.10(1), once a court gives judgment for a liability the policy must cover, the insurer pays it, with costs and interest, even where it could cancel the policy — subject to the exceptions of that section.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Monarch third-party insurance in Kenya?

Monarch publishes no third-party premium on its website (seen 28 October 2026). The price depends on the vehicle and its use — private, commercial or for hire — and is given as a quote on its online platform bima.monarchinsurance.co.ke, through its form, WhatsApp or branches.

Is Monarch third-party insurance valid in Kenya?

Yes, if the policy is issued by The Monarch Insurance Company Limited, which is on IRA's 2026 list of licensed general insurers. Check the certificate itself on DMVIC (*352#) before you drive.

Does Monarch third-party insurance cover my own car?

No. Monarch's page says third party only "covers liability to third parties only". Fire and theft of your car come with third party, fire and theft; accidental damage only with comprehensive cover.

Does third-party insurance cover the other car's damage?

Cap. 405 only requires cover for death or bodily injury to other people, up to KES 3 million per person. Many policies add property damage up to a limit; ask Monarch to state it on your quote.

Can I buy Monarch insurance online?

Yes. Monarch's motor page links a "Buy Insurance Cover" platform at bima.monarchinsurance.co.ke, an online application form and a WhatsApp line.
