Cheapest car insurance in Kenya

Why there is no honest top 10, and how to pay less

Short answerChecked 11 October 2026
There is no official top 10 of the cheapest car insurance companies in Kenya: the regulator (IRA) publishes no price comparison, and each of the 35 general insurers on its 2026 list prices your car itself, so the cheapest one depends on your vehicle, its value, its use and your claims record. Published schedules show how it works: CIC's own brochure charges third-party only at KES 7,500 a year for a private car, and comprehensive cover at 6%, 4% or 3% of the car's value depending on the value band, with a minimum of KES 37,500. To find your cheapest price, compare written quotes for the same cover from licensed insurers.

Why no one can honestly rank the 10 cheapest insurers

Lists of the "top 10 cheapest" car insurers in Kenya are not based on any official data. IRA's 2026 list of licensed entities names the companies allowed to sell general insurance, including motor, in alphabetical order; it says nothing about price. We reproduce it on our licensed insurance companies page.

  • Your quote is personal. A comprehensive premium is a rate applied to the value of your car, then adjusted for its use, your claims record and the extras you add.
  • The cover is not the same. One insurer's cheaper price can come with a lower third-party property limit, fewer free benefits or a higher excess.
  • Schedules change. The figures below are the insurers' own published documents, with the date they carry; ask each insurer for its current rate.

So the useful question is not "who is cheapest?" but "what is the lowest price for the cover I need, from a licensed insurer?". The rest of this page shows how to answer it.

How a car insurance premium is calculated in Kenya

The cheapest legal cover is third-party only, the minimum required by Cap. 405; our third-party vs comprehensive guide explains what each pays for. In the schedule below, third-party only is a flat premium and comprehensive cover a percentage of the car's value, with a floor. CIC's own Motor Private brochure (version 08/2021, seen October 2026) shows the mechanics:

CIC Motor Private, as published by CICBasic rateMinimum premium
Comprehensive, car valued KES 500,000 to 1,500,0006% of the sum insuredKES 37,500
Comprehensive, car valued KES 1,500,001 to 2,500,0004% of the sum insuredKES 37,500
Comprehensive, car valued above KES 2,500,0003% of the sum insuredKES 37,500
Third-party only, one private carFlat premiumKES 7,500

CIC's brochure adds that a vehicle valued below KES 500,000 is insured under third-party only. Worked from that table: a car valued at KES 1,000,000 would cost 6% = KES 60,000 a year in basic premium, and one valued at KES 3,000,000 would cost 3% = KES 90,000. These are CIC's figures for its own policy, not a market price.

The sum insured is the value you declare, and it is also what the insurer pays at most after a write-off. Declaring a lower value to cut the premium leaves you under-insured when you claim.

Compare what each quote includes, not just the price

Two quotes at the same price can cover very different things. The table sets the free limits two insurers publish side by side, in alphabetical order. It is a reading of their own documents, not a rating:

Extras are priced separately. CIC's brochure lists, among others, political violence cover at 0.25% of the sum insured (minimum KES 2,500), an own-damage excess protector at 0.25% (minimum KES 5,000), a theft and own-damage excess protector at 1% (minimum KES 10,000) and a courtesy car of up to KES 30,000 for KES 3,000 — our excess protector article works through when that extra pays off. When you compare quotes, ask each insurer to list the same benefits and extras.

The no claims discount: the biggest saving you control

ICEA LION's motor insurance page publishes its no claims discount for comprehensive cover on private cars:

Claims-free yearsDiscount published by ICEA LION
110%
220%
330%
440%
550%

The same page warns that "minimum premium may apply to reduce discount allowed": if the discounted premium falls below the insurer's floor, you pay the floor. When you switch insurers, ask the old one for written proof of your claims-free years so the new one can apply the discount.

Five ways to pay less without losing cover

  1. Choose the right cover type. Third-party only, third-party fire and theft, or comprehensive: ICEA LION, for example, sells all three. A lender may require comprehensive cover if the car is on a loan.
  2. Declare the car's real value. Too high and you pay for cover you cannot claim; too low and a write-off pays less than the car is worth.
  3. Keep your no claims discount. Small repairs paid yourself can be cheaper than losing a discount step; ask the insurer for the figures before you claim.
  4. Buy only the extras you need. Each extra (excess protector, political violence, courtesy car) adds to the premium; check which ones are already free in the policy.
  5. Compare at least three written quotes for the same cover, the same value and the same extras, and check that each company is on IRA's list.

Before paying, make sure the seller is licensed and that the certificate is issued in your name: the IRA list shows every licensed insurer. To receive quotes for your car from licensed insurers, ask for quotes here.

How much is third-party car insurance in Kenya?

Each insurer sets its own price. CIC's own Motor Private brochure (version 08/2021) lists third-party only at KES 7,500 a year for one private car.

How is comprehensive car insurance calculated in Kenya?

As a percentage of the car's value, with a minimum premium. CIC's brochure lists 6%, 4% or 3% of the sum insured depending on the value band, with a minimum of KES 37,500, before extras and discounts.

How can I reduce my car insurance premium in Kenya?

Choose the cover type you actually need, declare the real value, keep your no claims discount (ICEA LION publishes 10% after one claims-free year up to 50% after five), buy only the extras you need and compare several quotes.
