Tuk-tuk insurance cost in Kenya

What the law requires, published rates and what changes the price

Short answerChecked 21 October 2026
Tuk-tuk insurance in Kenya is priced by each insurer, and no regulator publishes a tariff; one published schedule, from Co-op Bank's bancassurance intermediary, lists third-party cover for a tricycle at KES 5,000 a year including passenger liability, and comprehensive PSV cover at 4% of the tuk-tuk's value, with a minimum of KES 15,000, plus KES 500 per person for passenger legal liability. Whatever the price, a tuk-tuk carrying fare-paying passengers must have at least Third Party Public Service Vehicle insurance (NTSA Motorcycle Regulations, regs 10(e) and 11(b)), which covers its passengers.

The cover a tuk-tuk must have before any price

In Kenyan law a tuk-tuk is a motorcycle: the NTSA (Operation of Motorcycles) Regulations, 2015 define a motorcycle as any mechanically propelled vehicle with less than four wheels (reg. 2). What it must carry depends on its use:

Use of the tuk-tukMinimum insuranceSource
Taxi carrying fare-paying passengers"At the minimum a motor commercial public service vehicle insurance cover"; the owner must ensure at least Third Party Public Service Vehicle insuranceNTSA Motorcycle Regulations, regs 10(e) and 11(b)
Any other use on a road (private, deliveries)A policy covering third-party risksCap. 405, s.4

Passengers are the reason a taxi tuk-tuk cannot use a private policy. Cap. 405, s.5(b)(ii), lets a policy exclude people carried in the vehicle except where passengers are carried for hire or reward; the compulsory cover may be capped at three million shillings per claimant (s.5(b)(iv)). Our boda boda and motorcycle insurance guide sets out the same rules for two-wheelers.

Driving uninsured is an offence: a fine of up to KES 10,000, up to two years in prison, or both, and a possible 12-month driving ban, mandatory on a repeat conviction (Cap. 405, s.4(2)).

What tuk-tuk insurance costs: a published schedule

Few sellers publish tuk-tuk prices. Co-op Bank's insurance agency, Co-op Consultancy & Bancassurance Intermediary, is one that does: its Tuk Tuk insurance page (Web Archive copy of 20 May 2026) sets out this rating. It is the intermediary's own statement for the policies it places, not a market price or a regulator's tariff:

Cover, as published by Co-op Bank's bancassurance intermediaryPrice
Third party, tricycleKES 5,000, "inclusive of Passenger Liability"
Comprehensive PSV4% of the sum insured, minimum KES 15,000 (written "15k" on the page)
Passenger legal liability (PLL) with comprehensiveKES 500 per person

Worked from that schedule: 4% of the value reaches the KES 15,000 minimum at a sum insured of KES 375,000. Below that value you pay the minimum; above it, the premium grows with the value — a tuk-tuk insured for KES 500,000 would cost 4% = KES 20,000 in basic comprehensive premium, before passenger legal liability.

KCB's bancassurance intermediary also describes a "Boda Boda & Tuk Tuk (PSV)" cover for motorcycles and tuk-tuks used for public transport, against accidental loss or damage and covering drivers and passengers, but publishes no price (seen October 2026). For a firm figure, ask for a written quote.

What changes the price of a tuk-tuk policy

  • Cover type. Third-party only is a flat premium in the schedule above; comprehensive cover adds the tuk-tuk itself (Co-op's page sets excesses for own damage and theft) and is priced as a percentage of the tuk-tuk's value.
  • Use. A taxi needs PSV cover with passengers included (regs 10(e) and 11(b)); a tuk-tuk not carrying fares only needs ordinary third-party cover under Cap. 405, s.4. Tell the insurer how the vehicle is used.
  • Value declared. Comprehensive premium is a rate on the sum insured, which is also the most the insurer pays after a write-off; under-declaring cuts the premium and the payout.
  • Passengers. Passenger legal liability is charged per person in Co-op's schedule (KES 500).
  • Driver. Co-op's page adds an extra excess of KES 5,000 for a young or novice driver.

The excesses and limits behind the price

A cheap premium can hide high excesses or low limits. Co-op's page lists these for its tuk-tuk cover, which makes it a useful checklist for any quote:

ItemAs published by Co-op Bank's bancassurance intermediary
Own damage excess2.5% of the sum insured, minimum KES 7,500
Theft excess10% of the sum insured, minimum KES 10,000
Theft and recovery excess2.5% of the value, minimum KES 7,500
Young or novice driverAdditional KES 5,000
Passenger legal liabilityKES 3,500,000 per person, KES 10,000,000 per event
Third-party property damageKES 2,000,000
Third-party personal injuryUnlimited
Medical expensesKES 50,000
Towing chargesKES 10,000

Its passenger limit of KES 3.5 million per person is above the three million shillings per claimant that Cap. 405, s.5(b)(iv), allows a policy to stop at. Ask every insurer for the same lines in writing so that the quotes compare like for like.

How to buy tuk-tuk insurance and check it

Co-op's page asks for a filled proposal form, a copy of the national ID, the KRA PIN certificate, the logbook (or the purchase receipt and invoice) and the driving licence; it sells to anyone over 18 with a valid driving licence.

  1. Tell the insurer the tuk-tuk carries passengers for hire, and check that the certificate shows PSV cover.
  2. Compare the same cover: third-party or comprehensive, the same sum insured, the same passenger liability and excesses.
  3. Check the insurer is licensed, on the IRA list of insurance companies.
  4. Verify the certificate the day you receive it, on *352# or the DMVIC site.

Frequently asked questions

How much is tuk-tuk insurance in Kenya?

Each insurer sets its price. Co-op Bank's bancassurance intermediary publishes third-party cover for a tricycle at KES 5,000 including passenger liability, and comprehensive PSV cover at 4% of the value with a KES 15,000 minimum, plus KES 500 per person for passenger legal liability (Web Archive copy of 20 May 2026).

What insurance does a tuk-tuk need in Kenya?

A tuk-tuk taxi must have at least Third Party Public Service Vehicle insurance, which covers its passengers (NTSA Motorcycle Regulations, regs 10(e) and 11(b)). A tuk-tuk not carrying fares needs at least third-party cover under Cap. 405, s.4.

Can I use private third-party insurance for a tuk-tuk that carries passengers?

No. Cap. 405, s.5(b)(ii), only lets a policy leave out passengers when they are not carried for hire or reward, and the NTSA regulations require PSV cover for three-wheeled taxis.

How is comprehensive tuk-tuk insurance calculated?

As a percentage of the value you declare, with a minimum premium. In Co-op's published schedule it is 4% with a minimum of KES 15,000, so the minimum applies up to a sum insured of KES 375,000.

What is the penalty for driving a tuk-tuk without insurance in Kenya?

A fine of up to KES 10,000, up to two years in prison, or both, and a possible 12-month driving ban, mandatory on a repeat conviction (Cap. 405, s.4(2)).
