Sanlam medical cover in Kenya

What Sanlam Allianz sells, and what it does not

Short answerChecked 20 October 2026
Sanlam does not sell medical cover in Kenya today: Sanlam Allianz Kenya's website (seen October 2026) lists no individual, family or group medical insurance plan, and IRA's 2025 figures show no medical premium for Sanlam Allianz General Insurance. What it offers near health is a post-retirement medical fund (a savings plan regulated by the Retirement Benefits Authority), personal accident cover that reimburses medical costs after an accident, and travel insurance with emergency medical cover abroad. For hospital and outpatient cover in Kenya, you need one of the insurers that do write medical business.

Is there a Sanlam medical insurance plan in Kenya?

No — not one you can buy as a medical policy. We checked the two websites of the group in Kenya in October 2026:

  • General insurance (Sanlam Allianz General Insurance): its individual menu lists home, motor, personal accident, SME and travel insurance; its corporate menu lists property, engineering, liability, marine, group personal accident and work injury covers. No medical or health product.
  • Life insurance (Sanlam Life): savings, education, annuity, pension and group life products, and one health-related plan — the Akiba Plus Post Retirement Medical Plan, described below.

The regulator's figures say the same thing. In IRA's Insurance Industry Release for Q4 2025, Appendix 18 shows KES 7.73 billion of gross premium for Sanlam Allianz General Insurance in 2025, spread over motor, fire, liability, work injury and other classes — and a dash in the Medical column. The same report notes that Sanlam General Insurance and Jubilee Allianz General Insurance merged during the last quarter of 2025 and are reported under Sanlam Allianz General.

Jubilee's medical cover is not part of Sanlam Allianz. The merger concerned Jubilee's general (motor, property) insurer; medical cover under the Jubilee name is still sold by Jubilee Health Insurance, a separate licensed company — see Jubilee's medical packages.

The Post Retirement Medical Plan: savings, not insurance

Sanlam Allianz's Post Retirement Medical Plan page describes a fund "designed to assist citizens to save for their medical expenses in retirement", regulated by the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA), not by IRA. It works in two phases, per the page:

  1. Savings phase: you contribute while you are employed.
  2. Utilisation phase: after retirement, the money saved pays for medical cover.

The page says the fund, run through its Akiba Plus platform, is open to occupational retirement schemes registered under the RBA Act whose rules allow extra voluntary contributions for a post-retirement medical fund, and that any employer may enrol its employees.

So this plan does not pay a hospital bill next month: it builds a pot to buy medical cover later. The page gives no contribution levels, fees or benefits.

Two Sanlam covers that do pay medical costs

Two of Sanlam Allianz's general products include medical expenses, but only in narrow situations:

ProductMedical costs it covers (insurer's own page)What it is not
Personal accident"Reimburses medical expenses incurred as a result of an accident"; open from infancy to 70 years, family members and domestic workers includedNot cover for illness, maternity or chronic conditions
Travel insuranceEmergency medical cover "up to KES 5 million", medical transportation, evacuation and repatriation, 24/7 assistance; couple and family cover for trips of 180 days or lessOnly abroad, during the trip

Neither page gives a price or a hospital list (seen October 2026). How accident cover works, and what it pays, is explained in our personal accident guide.

Hospitals and prices: why you will not find a Sanlam list

A hospital panel and a premium table come with a medical policy. As Sanlam Allianz publishes no medical policy in Kenya, there is no Sanlam hospital panel and no Sanlam medical price to quote. Be wary of a list or a price presented as "Sanlam medical cover": ask which company issues the policy, and check that it is a licensed insurer that writes medical business.

  • The company: the insurer named on the policy must be on IRA's list of licensed insurers — see the companies and their regulator figures on our Sanlam Allianz profile and other insurer profiles.
  • The class: IRA's 2025 figures show which insurers actually wrote medical premium; the industry total was KES 93.29 billion. We set those figures out, insurer by insurer, in what the regulator's figures show about health insurers.
  • The panel: ask for the hospital list in writing before you pay, and check that your usual hospital is on it.

If you came looking for Sanlam medical cover

  1. Decide what you need: inpatient only, or outpatient, maternity, dental and optical too; who the dependants are.
  2. Check what your Social Health Authority (SHA) cover already pays for, so the private policy covers the rest.
  3. Ask Sanlam Allianz only for what it sells: accident cover for the family, or travel cover before a trip.
  4. For hospital cover, ask licensed medical insurers for quotes, and compare the same benefits, waiting periods and panel.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sanlam have medical insurance in Kenya?

Not as a medical policy. Sanlam Allianz Kenya's website lists no individual, family or group medical plan (seen October 2026), and IRA's 2025 figures show no medical premium for Sanlam Allianz General Insurance. It sells a post-retirement medical savings fund, personal accident and travel insurance.

Is Jubilee medical cover now Sanlam Allianz?

No. The merger with Sanlam concerned Jubilee Allianz General Insurance, Jubilee's former general insurer. Jubilee medical cover is sold by Jubilee Health Insurance, a separate licensed company.

What is the Sanlam Post Retirement Medical Plan?

A savings fund regulated by the Retirement Benefits Authority: you contribute while employed, and after retirement the money pays for medical cover. It is not an insurance policy that pays hospital bills now.

Which Sanlam Allianz hospitals can I use?

There is no Sanlam medical hospital panel in Kenya, because it publishes no medical policy. A panel comes with the medical policy of the insurer you choose; ask for it in writing before paying.

Does Sanlam personal accident cover pay hospital bills?

Only after an accident: its page says it reimburses medical expenses incurred as a result of an accident. Illness, maternity and chronic conditions need a medical policy.
