ShwAARi premiums: the table AAR publishes

The ShwAARi brochure (file dated February 2025) gives annual premiums for ages 0–64, by family size (M = member, M+1 = member and one dependant, and so on):

Cover limitMM+1M+2M+3M+4

For members aged 65 and above, the brochure's table is higher — for one person, from KES 20,377 (KES 100,000 limit) to KES 192,805 (KES 2,000,000), and for a couple (M+1) from KES 37,698 to KES 354,819.

These are the brochure's rates, not a quote. The brochure says "flexible payments accepted": ask AAR for the instalment amounts, any levies and whether the table above is still current.

How ShwAARi works: limits, waiting periods, eligibility

  • One limit: you may use up to 30% of the annual limit for outpatient care; outpatient bills above KES 6,000 need pre-authorisation.
  • Benefits on every plan: inpatient, outpatient, emergency evacuation, ambulance and prescription drugs.
  • Waiting periods: one week for illness; 10 months for inpatient treatment of pre-existing or chronic conditions (3 months for outpatient visits linked to them); 10 months for non-accident surgery, pregnancy and childbirth; none for groups of more than 15 people.
  • Eligibility: from birth to 100 years; dependants are spouses and children to 18, or to 25 with proof of schooling. A medical examination is required over 55, or if underwriting asks for one.
  • Exclusions in the brochure include cosmetic surgery, infertility treatment, hearing aids and experimental treatment.

The Individual and Family Medical Plan

AAR's family plan page lists what the plan covers, without limits or prices:

  • Outpatient: diagnostic tests, radiology, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, cancer consultations, dental treatment (extractions, fillings, root canal, minor oral surgery), optical (lenses, frames) and pre- and post-natal care.
  • Inpatient: maternity (normal and caesarean delivery), a lodger's fee for parents of insured children under 8, discharge medication for up to 14 days, reconstructive surgery, accidental damage to teeth and eyes.
  • Extras: injuries from political violence, local and international evacuation, nutrition advice, a 24-hour call centre and funeral expenses.
  • To join: be a Kenyan resident, hold a KRA PIN, and be aged from newborn (on discharge) to 64.
