The medical covers CIC sells to individuals and families
CIC's health covers are sold by CIC General Insurance, one of the general insurers on IRA's list — see the CIC profile for the regulator's figures. IRA's Q4 2025 industry release (Appendix 18) puts CIC General's gross medical premium for 2025 at KES 10,175.1 million. What follows is CIC's own description of its products (seen 28 October 2026), not a rating.
| Cover | For whom | Inpatient limit (CIC's pages) |
|---|---|---|
| Family Medisure | Principal aged 18–59, one legal spouse, children up to 25 (21–25 with proof of schooling) | KES 300,000 to KES 10,000,000 a year, seven options (CIC's January 2026 article) |
| Seniors Mediplan | Principal and spouse aged 60–80 to join, renewable for life | KES 300,000 to KES 5,000,000 per family |
| CoopCare | Members of a registered cooperative, at least 4 principal members | KES 100,000 to KES 300,000 per family (CoopCare page) |
| Afya Bora | Families | KES 250,000 per family per year, with KES 50,000 outpatient (flier V03.2017) |
| SME Medipack | Small businesses and their staff | From KES 300,000 to KES 5,000,000 |
CIC Family Medisure: what it includes
According to CIC's Family Medisure article of 19 January 2026:
- Inpatient plans from KES 300,000 to KES 10 million, each with extras: personal accident cover "up to Ksh 1 million for the principal member", last expense cover, annual check-ups and COVID-19 protection.
- Optional benefits: outpatient (specialist consultations, prescribed medicines, laboratory tests, children's immunisation), dental (fillings, root canals), optical and maternity.
- Shared or individual limits: "family-shared benefits or individual per-person coverage".
- Premiums: "age-banded"; CIC publishes no premium table for Medisure.
- Network: "over 1,600 providers across all 47 counties in Kenya & overseas", with telemedicine and drug delivery through CIC Pharmacy.
- Ages: principal 18–59 to join, children up to 25, one legal spouse; at 65 the member moves to Seniors Mediplan.
The Health Solutions page lists among the inpatient benefits the hospital bed ("minus NHIF rebate amount" in CIC's wording), diagnostics, organ transplants, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, physiotherapy and a resident mother's fee.
CIC Seniors Mediplan: cover from 60
The Health Solutions page sets out Seniors Mediplan in a question-and-answer list:
| Point | What CIC says |
|---|---|
| Joining age | 60 to 80 years, principal and one legal spouse; existing members renew without age limit |
| Children | Not eligible — they go on Family Medisure |
| Medical report | Required before acceptance; the examination is at the applicant's cost, at a hospital CIC appoints |
| Limits | Inpatient KES 300,000–5,000,000 per family; outpatient KES 50,000–200,000 per person; dental and optical KES 15,000–20,000 per person each |

| Network | Over 900 providers across Kenya; co-payment per hospital on outpatient |
| Extra | Last expense cover if the insured dies of a covered condition |
Paying in instalments through a premium finance facility is explained in our article on insurance premium financing.
Waiting periods and transfers from another insurer
For Seniors Mediplan, CIC lists:
- 30 days for outpatient and acute illness admissions.
- 1 year for pre-existing and chronic conditions, gynaecological surgery, psychiatric treatment, eye surgery and dental surgery.
- 2 years for cancer treatment; 3 years for organ transplant and for reconstructive surgery.
- None for accidents.
CIC says waiting periods are waived for members "transiting within 30 days from another insurance underwriter or their respective Corporate Medical Schemes", subject to review and written approval. It asks for the renewal invitation from the old insurer, a stamped claims utilisation statement and a medical examination report. Its questions article adds that corporate covers carry no waiting periods.
CoopCare and Afya Bora: the published premiums
The only CIC premiums we found online are CoopCare's: the CoopCare flier, uploaded in October 2022, has the table below, and the application form on CIC's CoopCare page shows the same basic premiums today (seen 28 October 2026), plus the training levy (0.2%) and the PHCF levy (0.25%) — for example KES 7,500 becomes KES 7,534. Yearly basic premiums in shillings:
| CoopCare plan (inpatient limit) | Inpatient only: member | Inpatient only: member + up to 6 | Full cover: member | Full cover: member + up to 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Option I (KES 100,000) | 2,500 | 7,300 | 7,500 | 26,700 |
| Option II (KES 200,000) | 3,200 | 10,800 | 8,500 | 31,600 |
| Option III (KES 300,000) | 3,800 | 12,700 | 9,500 | 36,000 |
"Inpatient only" includes maternity and last expense; "full cover" adds outpatient (KES 30,000–50,000), dental and optical (KES 5,000–7,500 each). Each dependant above six costs between KES 1,100 and KES 4,600 more, by plan. The CoopCare page today sets a minimum of 4 principal members (the 2022 flier said 10), principal and spouse up to 70, a KES 100 co-payment per outpatient visit, KES 500 per day of admission for a member without NHIF, a one-year wait for pre-existing conditions and maternity, and Kenya-only cover through a low-cost provider panel.
Afya Bora, per its flier, is a combined family cover: KES 250,000 inpatient and KES 50,000 outpatient per family per year, a shared funeral benefit of KES 50,000, normal and caesarean delivery, pre-existing and chronic conditions up to KES 50,000 after a six-month wait, a KES 100 co-payment per outpatient visit, and no CT or MRI scans. The flier shows no premium.
How to get a CIC medical quote and claim
- Choose the cover that fits your age and situation: Family Medisure (18–59), Seniors Mediplan (60–80), CoopCare through your SACCO or cooperative.
- Ask for a written quote — CIC says its premium "will depend on the specific CIC health plan you choose, your age bracket, and the level of benefits you select". Its Family Medisure article gives WhatsApp 0703 099 000 and retailmedical@cic.co.ke.
- Check the provider panel: CIC publishes panel lists; outside the panel you may pay first and claim a reimbursement, "subject to policy limits".
- Read the waiting periods and exclusions in the policy before paying.
- Compare with other insurers' family covers — Jubilee J-Care, AAR ShwAARi, First Assurance First Med — or ask for quotes here.
Health premiums paid for yourself, your spouse or your children can earn insurance relief on your income tax: our insurance relief guide explains the 15% rule.
