The health covers Britam sells in Kenya
We read Britam's own pages and brochures in October 2026. What follows is Britam's statement about its products, not a rating:
- Milele Health — the main individual and family cover, in five plans. The brochures name the insurer as Britam General Insurance Company (K) Limited. The Milele page says you can join up to age 80 and stay covered for life.
- [Milele Junior](https://ke.britam.com/home/personal/protect-who-you-love/health-insurance-covers/milele-health-plan/insure-a-child) — a cover for children alone; Britam says parents do not need to be insured for their child to be covered.
- [Milele Senior](https://ke.britam.com/home/personal/protect-who-you-love/health-insurance-covers/milele-health-plan/insure-your-elderly-parent) — for people aged 55 and above, with no maximum exit age per Britam's page; a spouse and dependants can be added.
- Bima ya Mwananchi — a lower-cost individual or family cover sold through Britam Connect, the only Britam health cover whose premiums are printed (below).
- [Hospital Cash](https://connect.britam.com/our-products/britam-hospital-cash-cover) — not a medical cover: it pays an income when you are admitted for more than 3 days.
- Group covers — Afya Tele for registered groups of more than 10 people (chamas, saccos, SMEs), and a medical cover for employers' staff.
Britam's licensed companies, the regulator's figures and its complaint count are on our Britam profile.
Milele Health: the five plans compared
Every Milele plan offers the same range of inpatient limits, KES 300,000 to KES 10 million, and outpatient visits without approval from Britam. What changes from one plan to the next, per Britam's Milele page:
| Plan | Hospitals you can use | Chronic conditions | Critical illness cash | Mental health |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platinum | Open panel: all hospitals, including Aga Khan, Nairobi, MP Shah, Mater | New ones: sub-limit for 2 years, full cover from year 3; pre-existing, cancer, HIV/AIDS, congenital: full cover after the waiting period | All inpatient limits | Therapy, inpatient psychiatric care, alcohol and substance rehab |
| Gold | Open panel | New ones: higher sub-limits than Silver; pre-existing, cancer, HIV/AIDS, congenital: sub-limits | All inpatient limits | Same as Platinum |
| Silver | Open panel | Sub-limits | 5M and 10M limits only | Therapy and inpatient psychiatric care, no rehab |
| Bronze | Medium-cost hospitals (tier 2 and 3) | Sub-limits | Not included | Therapy and inpatient psychiatric care, no rehab |
| Essential | Mission and government hospitals, low-cost facilities | Sub-limits | Not included | Therapy and inpatient psychiatric care, no rehab |
Annual wellness checks are part of the inpatient cover on all five plans. Maternity, dental and optical benefits come with limits set in each plan's brochure. The Platinum brochure (October 2025) also lists emergency evacuation and pre-authorised referral treatment in India, and covers a spouse and children up to 25 years.
What it costs: the Bima ya Mwananchi premiums Britam publishes
The Bima ya Mwananchi brochure (October 2025) is the only Britam health document we found with a price list. The inpatient limit is shared by the family; premiums in Kenya shillings:
| Option | Shared inpatient limit | Member alone | Member + 1 | Member + 2 | Each extra member |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 75,000 | 4,600 | 7,000 | 9,400 | 2,400 |
| 2 | 100,000 | 5,000 | 7,500 | 10,000 | 2,500 |
| 3 | 200,000 | 7,300 | 10,600 | 13,900 | 3,300 |
| 4 | 300,000 | 8,900 | 12,900 | 16,900 | 4,000 |
| 5 | 500,000 | 15,500 | 20,500 | 25,500 | 5,000 |
Outpatient cover is optional and costs more than the cheaper inpatient options. For a member alone, the brochure lists KES 13,180 for a KES 30,000 limit, KES 18,580 for KES 50,000 and KES 21,880 for KES 75,000 under 40 years; over 40, KES 14,680, KES 20,680 and KES 24,480. Every outpatient visit carries a KES 300 co-payment.
- What the inpatient cover includes: a general ward bed, surgery, ICU and theatre, drugs, maternity (KES 20,000 for a normal delivery on options 1 to 3, KES 30,000 on options 4 and 5; KES 45,000 for a caesarean) and a last expense benefit of KES 40,000.
- Chronic and pre-existing conditions: covered up to half the inpatient limit (KES 37,500 on option 1, KES 250,000 on option 5).
- Who can join: applicant and spouse aged 18 to 65 at entry, covered to an exit age of 70; children from 38 weeks to 18, or to 24 if still students.
- How to pay: paybill 4157051, with the member card number as the account.
Waiting periods and exclusions
A waiting period is the time after the start of cover during which a type of claim is not paid. Britam's documents set them as follows:
| Claim | Milele (Platinum brochure) | Bima ya Mwananchi (brochure) |
|---|---|---|
| Accidents | None | None |
| Illness | 30 days (outpatient and acute inpatient care) | One month |
| Newly diagnosed chronic condition, inpatient | 3 months | — |
| Pre-existing chronic, congenital, cancer, HIV/AIDS | 12 months | 10 months (chronic and pre-existing) |
| Maternity | 10 months | 10 months |
| Organ transplant | 24 months | — |
| Surgery not caused by an accident | — | One year (one month for an acute abdomen) |
Bima ya Mwananchi excludes cosmetic and obesity treatment, infertility and hormone replacement therapy, braces, contact lenses, hearing aids, nutritional supplements, and costs recoverable from another source such as SHIF or WIBA. The Milele brochures exclude cosmetic treatment, infertility and family planning, experimental treatment and undeclared pre-existing conditions.
Declare every condition on the application form: an undeclared pre-existing condition is an exclusion. How SHA and a private cover share a bill is explained in SHA vs private medical insurance.
Which hospitals accept Britam medical cover
It depends on the cover. On Milele, the plan decides: Platinum, Gold and Silver open all hospitals, Bronze tier 2 and 3 hospitals, Essential mission, government and low-cost facilities. Britam's hospital finder lists providers with their address, phone number and services (inpatient, outpatient, maternity, dental, optical). Bima ya Mwananchi members use the Britam Microinsurance provider panel 2026, listed county by county.
- Check the facility against your plan's panel before a planned visit.
- Show your Milele card at the hospital, clinic or pharmacy; Britam says outpatient visits need no pre-authorisation once the waiting period has been served.
- Ask for pre-authorisation before major surgery, an MRI or CT scan, or a specialised procedure — the Milele Senior page lists these among the treatments that may need it.
Britam's medical business in the regulator's figures, and how to buy
IRA's Q4 2025 industry release shows KES 7,102.4 million of medical premium for Britam General Insurance in 2025, with a medical incurred claims ratio of 73.2% — the share of premium spent on claims, not a speed or satisfaction score. We set out the same figures for every large medical insurer in what the regulator's figures show about health insurers.
- Choose the cover: Milele plan and inpatient limit, or a Bima ya Mwananchi option; decide on outpatient, maternity, dental and optical.
- Apply: the Platinum brochure lists a Britam financial advisor, any Britam branch, an online application at britam.com, or a call or WhatsApp to 0709 165 000 or 0705 100 100.
- Get the quote and the policy document in writing, with the premium, the period it covers, every sub-limit and the hospital panel.
- Pay, then keep the card: waiting periods run from the start date of the cover.
