Who sells one month third-party insurance in Kenya
What the insurers say on their own pages, read on 31 October 2026. It reproduces their words; it is not a recommendation, and other licensed insurers may sell monthly cover without advertising it.
| Insurer (IRA 2026 list) | Monthly cover it advertises | How to buy | Price published? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Directline Assurance Company Limited | "Motor Private Monthly TPO Cover" — Third Party Only for a private car, "on a monthly plan" | Dial *319#; information line 0711 030155 | No |
| Directline Assurance Company Limited | Motorcycle Third Party Only, "with monthly or annual premium payment", for personal, business, taxi or delivery use "depending on policy terms" | Its website and branches; documents: logbook, ID or passport, riding licence, KRA PIN | No |
| CIC General Insurance Limited | CIC Easy Bima: "a monthly motor insurance cover", premium paid monthly, "up to 12 instalments" | easybima.cic.co.ke: vehicle details, quote, payment, then print the sticker | No |
Sources: Directline home page, Directline motorcycle insurance, CIC Easy Bima brochure; both companies are on IRA's 2026 list of licensed entities. CIC's brochure describes a motor cover paid in monthly instalments and does not say it is third-party only: ask CIC which cover your quote is for.
How much is one month third-party insurance?
No monthly price is published on the pages above (31 October 2026), and IRA publishes no premium rates: each insurer sets its own. So any "monthly third-party price" you see on social media or a reseller's site is not the insurer's statement — only the amount on your own quote or certificate counts.
What we can show is how a yearly third-party premium is built and what some insurers publish for a year: see the cheapest car insurance in Kenya for published yearly third-party rates, and the car insurance calculator for the levies and stamp duty every policy adds. Before you choose monthly cover, ask for the monthly premium and the yearly premium for the same vehicle, and multiply: twelve monthly payments can cost more than one year paid at once.
Prefer to pay a full year in instalments instead? That is insurance premium financing: a loan pays the insurer for the year and you repay it monthly.
What the law asks of a one month policy
- Cover is compulsory every day you drive. Section 4 of Cap. 405 makes it an offence to use a vehicle on a road without a policy covering third-party risks. A month that is not renewed is a month without cover.
- The minimum is the same as a yearly policy. Section 5(b) requires cover for the death of, or bodily injury to, any person caused by the vehicle on a road, and allows the policy to exclude any sum above KES 3 million for one person. Damage to other people's property and to your own vehicle are not part of that minimum.
- No premium, no cover. Section 156 of the Insurance Act says no insurer shall assume a risk in Kenya until the premium is received: each month starts only once that month is paid.
- A lapse is not covered. CIC's Easy Bima brochure says it plainly: "Claims incurred during the lapsed period shall not be eligible for settlement." After a partial-damage claim you keep paying monthly; after a total loss, the balance of the premium is paid or deducted from the claim (CIC).
One month insurance for a motorcycle or boda boda
Directline's motorcycle page describes its Third Party Only cover as "basic and legally required" insurance for riders using their bikes "for personal, business, taxi, or delivery use, depending on policy terms", with monthly or annual premium options. It asks for the motorcycle logbook, a national ID or passport, a valid riding licence and a KRA PIN certificate.
"Depending on policy terms" matters for a boda boda: a bike that carries paying passengers is used for hire. Ask the insurer to write on the quote that the policy covers hire and reward use and passengers, and check the certificate shows it. More on covers for riders: motorcycle insurance in Kenya.
Before you pay, and every month after
- Check the insurer is on IRA's list: Directline and CIC are; a name you do not find there cannot issue a valid certificate.
- Pay only through the insurer's own channels — *319# for Directline's monthly private-car cover, CIC's Easy Bima site, a branch or a licensed agent — never to a personal number.
- Check the certificate the day it is issued by dialling *352# or in AKI's Bima Yangu app (AKI): the insurer, the vehicle and the cover dates must be right. A certificate that does not verify is not cover — see how to check motor insurance.
- Note the end date and renew before it, not after: with monthly cover that is twelve renewals a year.
Other insurers sell yearly third-party cover — Monarch, for example, quotes each vehicle and publishes no rate (Monarch third-party insurance).
